Previously in this column, I introduced a blue and black plastic cut that I saw in Thailand in 2020. The model in the photo was one found at a Chatuchak shop. This shop sells mainly high-grade blue and black plastic cuts, and as I liked them and bought them every week, the owner started to remember my face and started offering me various services. It had become. If you can build a relationship like this, it will be very useful for your work, as you will be able to give priority to the best specimens. However, in 2021, due to the new coronavirus, it became difficult to travel from Japan to Thailand, and I was unable to go to Thailand, which I had visited every year for nearly 30 years.
As someone who follows the betta trends every year, I was extremely disappointed, but this can't be helped. Fortunately, in this day and age we have something called the internet, so even if I couldn't go to Thailand, I was able to find some information. In the spring of 2022, various regulations were eased and it was finally possible to travel from Japan to Thailand. Naturally, as soon as I arrived in Bangkok, I went to Chatuchak to see the betta fish. However, due to the passage of time and the impact of the new coronavirus on business, many Beta stores have closed or relocated. In such a situation, I went to a new store and was looking for a new color or one that matched my taste.
The shop that sold my favorite blue and black plastic cuts had probably moved, and was no longer in its previous location. Feeling lonely, I looked around at some of the newly opened shops, and somehow found a shop that sold fish that had some vestiges of the old Blue & Black. As I was looking at the fish, the owner of the shop approached me and spoke to me. Surprisingly, the person from the shop where I used to buy blue and black plastic cuts, which I had liked before, seemed to remember me and called out to me. Needless to say, they praised each other's safety and were happy to see each other again. Fortunately, none of my Betta-related acquaintances in Thailand became seriously ill with the coronavirus, and I'm glad that everyone was safe. Now, in the Thai betta market in 2022, a fish called avatar with shiny spots on a dark background is extremely popular, and high-grade fish are in short supply despite being quite expensive.
The blue and black Plakat originally had a coloration that was quite similar to a variety called Avatar, and it seems that the breed was improved to be more similar to that variety. It was a spectacular sight to see so many beautiful specimens lined up with dark bodies studded with blue spots. Apart from these avatars, there are also many individuals with a beautiful balance of blue and black, making me feel like I've been away for a year and a half. The 2022 version of the blue and black fish, which has probably evolved from the blue and black photographed in 2020, has been further refined to become a wonderful fish.
I will introduce the avatar, which has many well-balanced spots on the side of the body, on another occasion, but this time I will introduce the blue and black plastic cut for 2022. It is very interesting to compare it with the 2020 specimen introduced in a previous column. The color evolution of betta fish is still continuing, so what kind of fish will they change into in a few years? I'm really looking forward to it.
