Due to the new coronavirus restrictions, I was unable to travel to Thailand at all in 2021.
I have been going to Thailand for reporting every year for nearly 30 years, but this is the first time I have not been able to travel at all.
Well, no one could have predicted that something like this would happen, and it would have been impossible to prevent it. So, I traveled to Thailand for the first time in 1 year and 8 months in mid-May 2022, when various restrictions were lifted.
As someone who has actually seen the changes in the improvement of betta fish every year, this blank is very big, and while I am nervous about how the Thai betta market is changing, I am also very excited. Ta.
Nowadays, the internet is so popular that it is very convenient to be able to get a lot of information easily. A long time ago, when there was no internet, it was almost impossible to get information about hobbies in far away countries.
However, it is dangerous to just accept biased information from the internet at face value, and it is often not trustworthy. It is important to see everything with your own eyes, and it is the most reliable.
It is best to treat online information only as a reference.
The next day, after crossing from Narita and arriving in Bangkok late at night, I slowly recovered from the fatigue of traveling, and headed to Chatuchak's pet store, suppressing my excitement.
As you would expect from not visiting for such a long time, there are changes everywhere. It seems that many of the familiar betta shops have moved or unfortunately quit their jobs.
In the case of a store that had moved within the same Chatuchak area, I learned about the new location from other stores and visited the new store to say hello.
At that time, I gave them the calendar provided by Mr. Suisaku, and they were very happy.
When I visited Thailand this time, I gave Mr. Suisaku's calendar as a gift to all my acquaintances, and it was very well received everywhere, which made me very happy.
Thai households have a custom of pasting photos and posters on the walls, so the poster-style calendar seemed to be very welcome.
This is off-topic, but the street in Chatuchak, commonly known as Soi Pakat, is still alive and well. New stores are opening in places that have moved or closed, and they are trying to differentiate themselves from other stores with unique product lineups.
In order to make friends with these new stores, it is important to first buy fish from them frequently and get them to remember your face. If you only ridicule them, they will only make you dislike them.
Thai people are always smiling and kind, but they have a surprisingly dual side, so be careful.
When I was looking at the fish at a betta shop for the first time in a while, I noticed that the trends in the varieties they stocked had changed more than I expected. The most important thing was that the number of copper-type fish called carp betta, nemo, and candy is increasing. The copper variety is a variety that has been seen for a long time, and is characterized by its coppery color with a metallic luster.
In September 2020, Koi betta copper had already been produced and appeared on the market, but it was not common at all, with a high price of over 10,000 yen in Japanese yen.
I also wanted a model for a photoshoot, but I remember giving up on buying one because it was so expensive. Copper from Koi Beta could now be purchased at an order of magnitude different price.
I thought it was only a matter of time since Koi Betta itself is not difficult to breed, but I was made to realize the weight of the blank life of the past year and several months.
This is a happy situation, as the price has become more affordable and the quality of the variety has further improved. So, I wanted an individual model, but I didn't rush and decided to purchase the model after looking around the entire Chatuchak Beta store.
Let's start with Koi Beta Copper, the betta scene in Bangkok in 2022.
(From the person in charge of the Suisaku column) You can see the scenery of the local betta shop sent by Mr. Yamazaki, and above the sales tank you can see the poster calendar produced to commemorate Suisaku's 50th anniversary.
