Due to travel restrictions due to the coronavirus, I was unable to travel to Thailand, which I had visited every year for nearly 30 years, so I was unable to provide you with the best information about Thailand in 2021.
For this reason, I have been introducing in this column the solid photos I had taken and saved up until September 2020, when I last visited Thailand.
At the time of writing this manuscript in May 2022, the Thai government has significantly eased restrictions on tourists due to the coronavirus.
Thailand, a tourism-based country, seems to have completely shifted its focus to economics. So, I was finally able to go to Thailand for an interview.
Since my application for a Thailand Pass for travel has been approved, I plan to travel to Thailand for the first time in 1 year and 7 months in mid-May.
I've never been overseas for so long, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the Thai betta and ornamental fish market is changing.
In the next installment of this column, we should be able to provide the latest information on Thai betta fish in 2022. Before that, I would like you to read the last article of Thailand's betta introduction until 2020.
This time we will be introducing a plastic cut called Blue & Black in Thailand.
I was drawn to it at first sight, so I immediately asked for the name of the variety, but the name was so accurate that I was put off.
It seems that not only Plakat but also Halfmoon was bred at the same time, and both were sold, but Plakat is more popular than Halfmoon in Thailand, so Plakat is overwhelmingly more popular. They were lined up at the shop.
Although it is not a flashy color, black seems to have a certain charm that attracts fish lovers for some reason.
Not only betta fish but also many other aquarium fish have been made into improved black varieties, so you can easily imagine their popularity. Even solid black was made in the early stages and became popular. Furthermore, it evolved into the Black Dragon, which has Dragon lineage, and the Black gained a firm position among the improved Betta breeds.
Individuals that are solid black and have a metallic luster near their heads are called samurai and are sold at high prices.
If you combine black as the basic color with other colors, you will end up with a very attractive fish.
Before the blue and black fish introduced here began to be seen on the market, there was a time when a fish that was thought to be a prototype was sold at a low price.
Now that I think about it, it may have been a missed selection during the process of producing Blue & Black.
The fish was not blue and black, but rather silver and black.
There was considerable variation in quality, but it was attractive in its own way, and I recorded the differences in color by photographing them.
Although Blue and Black are grouped together as a variety, they are quite diverse in phenotype. You can easily understand this by looking at the photos introduced here.
Whether you find this variation interesting or a lack of stability will vary from person to person.
There are individuals that lean toward black and those that lean towards blue, but both are attractive, and it would be interesting to fix them to increase their appearance rate.
In the case of new varieties like this, only the males are often released first, but I was happy to see that the females of this variety were also sold.
Perhaps this variety has evolved since then, and the fixation rate has increased, or a different phenotype has appeared.
It would be interesting if we could introduce the 2022 Blue & Black if we have a chance.
